A Salad Is Not Just For Summer

You all know we've been trying to make healthy changes in Monkeyfeet HQ and I'm embarking on my #mummymakeover to try to lose some weight and trim and tone. So I was really pleased to have the opportunity to work with Florette who have just launched a fab new website. They sent me out a lovely goody bag with a brill sports bottle to help me out when Im back to my running, some vouchers for thier lovely salad (of course) 'A Salad For All Seasons' recipe book by Harry Eastwood.

The book is full of scrummy ideas for salads all year round, and I was really inspired to make up my own Healthy Salad recipes, but ones that are suitable for winter time. So here's my current favourite lunchtime treat..

.Florette Leafy Rocket Salad

Winter Warmer Salad
1/2 bag of Rocket
1/2 courgette peeled into ribbons
6 Cubes Feta
1/2 chicken breast, cubed (leftovers from previous dinner_
6 pistachio nuts halved
1/2 small sweet potato cubed and baked (we used leftovers from the evening before)
Chilli and Garlic to taste

Heat a tiny drizzle of oil in a pan and throw in your courgette chilli and garlic and fry gently for a few minutes

Toss in the nuts sweet potato and chicken and allow to warm through.

Add the feta and stir heat for a further 2 minute then add the rocket, put a lid on the pan and toss all the ingredients to mix, serve immediately.

This is so moreish I promise you will love it

Mia Tui Luca Review and Giveaway

Id like you to meet Luca, Hes the new 'man' in my life!

Luca - The Ruck Sack

Isn't he gorgeous? This my friends is the latest offering from one of my new must have brands Mia Tui. I first discovered my love for Mia Tui when I was lucky enough to be chosen to test 'Baby Changing Bags' in the Mumii and pushchairtrader, Best Baby and Toddler Awards. Let me tell you it was instant LOVE! You can read my Minnie Amelie review here. But Back to Luca...

What They Say
Whether you are heading to the office, or exploring the 4 corners of the globe, The Luca is the perfect companion for every occasion.

3 separate compartments, one with padded lap-top pocket, insulated water-bottle holder, clips for keys and phone/pen holders.

The Luca is the perfect for a day out, allowing you to have your hands free, and with the padded straps and back panel makes for extra comfy ride.

What We Say
Oh I love it! The bag (like all of thier bags are soooo well made and really funtional. There are pockets and pouches for everything you would need, its really spacious and stylish and best of all Sparatacus will use it, so I've now doubled our carry on capacity for air travel. Previous to this he has refused all carry on luggage! But he actually said 'aye its alright' if you are a regular visitor you will know this is high praise indeed from my Spartacus!

There are 2 external bottle pockets and a huge front zip pocket, internally theres an insulated bottle pocket, key hook, 2 pen pockets and another pocket big enough for a mobile phone or wallet, then across the back internally is a completely cushioned section big enough for a lap top. There's also an airline friendly clear plastic pouch for toiletries or to use as a wet bag, a carry handle on the top of the bag and really comfortable adjustable rucksack straps.

Now I could show you a picture of the bag with all of our travel essentials in or packed for a day out with three kids in order to demonstarate how roomy and amazing it is. But I thought this was a much better vsualisation!

Please note neither I nor Mia Tui advise, recommend or endorse putting your children in a bag of any kind, and no children were harmed in the staging of this picture!!!!!

So all in all its a massive 9.5 /10 from me. I love it so much and my only improvement would be the addition of a co-ordinating pouch like the Amelie has, but genuinely thats just my obsessive love of matching accessories. Dont forget to pop over and say Hi to Mia Tui on Facebook and Twitter. Why not have a look at the website for some christmas inspiration, Im very pleased to say that whils having a little mooch around the site Ive managed to find Spartacus' new bag but ssshh it is a Christmas surprise

The gorgeous people at Mia Tui have said they will offer my readers a fabulous 30% off the Luca if you use code LUCA30 when ordering, and they've also ofered me a Luca to give away, you know the drill fill in the form and we will draw a winner from the correct entires...GO!

Mini Scientist Mission 2 - Termite's Tale

So this week mummy took me out on a metro train....

We went to Life Science Centre for their Pre-School Day. Now if mummy was writing this she would tell you that for this one day Life turn the attraction over to little people, there's no older school groups, there are places to park your pram (and let me tell you my mummy is particular about her prams, she won't just leave ours anywhere!) she would tell you there's extra baby changing facilities and ramps or lifts to make every area accessible if you have wheels, there's staff on hand all over and the cafe is full of yummy food and the staff will even help you carry your tray if you need it.
But Mummys not writing this, I am , so let me tell you the really good stuff. We arrived and went into this HUUUGE building and there were loads of noises and lights and people so I was very keen to get discovering.
As well as all the normal exhibits, which are brilliant fun anyway, there are loads of extra things to play on like building blocks, and a water play area, where I wore a lovely apron to keep me dry.

There's lots to touch and feel, you can even dig for bones like an archeologist (mummy told me that word, it means someone who digs up old stuff!) after I played at being an archeologist we went down in a lift and there were two people with creatures, real live creatures that you can touch! I LOVED THIS BIT! We saw stick insects and they looked like brilliant fun but mummy wasn't so keen on me holding one, I've no idea why?

Then upstairs there was so much to do and see that I practically forgot mummy was even with me. Upstairs is normally a great place to discover anyway, with a role play area filled with a recycling plant, kitchens, a supermarket a tree house and a garden not to mention craft areas, soft play and lego that my big brother and sister love. But on pre school day they also add lots of extras like science demonstrations , I saw a girl make her hair stand on end with a BALLOON! There was also A bubble disco (oh soooo much fun) and a den building area, I played for ages up there it was amazing.

Now the bits we missed! Piccolo Music run sessions through the day but they are so popular that you have to book in early and mummy missed out, she blames the builders being late which meant we didn't arrive until 11, I've made it clear we are to be there early next time! We also missed the kids movie in the planetarium as the 11.45 show was full and I sadly fell asleep before the 12.45 show! But we hear this brilliant show lasts 10mins and is a gentle introduction to the planetarium for little ones about a little bear who goes out of her cave alone for the first time at night. She looks for animals in the night sky and wonders if she can find herself up there. It’s really cute and is all written and in rhyme so brilliant for little people like me.
I also fell asleep before mummy could take me On the ice rink. See she gets special shoes so she can walk along helping me on the ice, and they also have helmets and special double blade skates for little ones like me (under 3yrs) so it's easier to stay upright.

Now a word from Mummy ...
We've had such a brilliant day and we are grateful to have been invited along to try out the pre school day. Here are my pointers for a smooth and efficient day
  • Arrive as early as possible so you can book in for Piccolo and also to avoid clashing with nap time like we did.
  • Queue a little way in advance for the planetarium show as it's really popular.
  • Pack a drink, there'll be lots of running and playing and leaving to get a drink will just cause crossness
  • Bring a change of clothes, water play can get 'enthusiastic'! My apologies to the mum who was watered like a plant by my little termite (blushing at the memory)
  • There's a packed lunch area so if you are bringing your own there's space for you, although I will say the cafe was nice and has plenty of choice.
  • Hire a locker, it's so much more relaxed if you can secure your valuables instead of trudging your bag around whilst crawling under a den chasing a toddler!
  • Plan a whole day, the centre has lots to offer and even if you do something else while your little person naps, like have a coffee (I took advantage of Termite sleeping to see Body Worlds Vital which was just amazing) I promise there's so much to do no one will get bored!

October Degusta Box Review

This month we were asked to review Degusta Box.

If you don't already know about Degusta, they are a subscription service for food, well more specifically, new to the market food. You pay £12.99 a month and every month you recieve a box with between 9 -14 item in it with a much higher value than you have paid. They then ask for you to give feed back which goes back to the companies featured in the boxes.

Our box arrived on Bonfire Night and as you can see we had eager little hands trying to find out what goodies were inside.

So in our box this month...

  • BriochePasquier Pan au Lait with Chocolate Chips (£1.60) -I'd like to tell you first han d that these were lovely but honestly I barely got a sniff! We are big Pan au Chocolat fans here and the kids , and husband wolfed these down so I managed a bite of Termites and it was delicious.
  • Brioche Pasquier Sliced brioche Loaf (£1.69)- This I can take full responsibility for reviewing, but in turn must blame them wholeheartedly for not doing so well on my diet! This is soft squishy brioche bread with chocolate chips in. Its so lovely just cold as it is, but toasted lightly OH MY DAYS. I have found a new addiction. The chips melt just so and the bread is warm and comforting truly a lovely lovely treat.
  • Dr Oetker Premium 90% Extra Dark Chocolate (£2.49). I will be truthful, I'm not in a baking place at the moment as my pantry is still packed into boxes after the awful flood damage we suffered so we havent used this yet but I have it earmarked for a lovely tiffin recipe.
  • Dr Oetker Fine Dark Cocoa Powder (£1.89) - This again hasnt been used but I did open it to have a sniff, I'm rather particular about the cocoa I use and I like a good strong powder and this smells deliciously strong and decadent
  • Bear Paws (55p)- These are a big favourite in Monkeyfeet HQ they are like little sugar free jellies and the kids love them.
  • Enhance Drinks (£2.49) - I have mixed feelings on this one, firstly for us its quite expensive for juice. I like that its suggar free and I LOVE that the packaging is so small but I wasnt too keen on the flavour, we got orange and passion fruit, , I would give one of the other flavours a try as the idea of such tiny packaging really appeals.
  • Solo Toasted Marshmallow Creme (£1.99) - Oh so loveely a pot of gooey gloopy marshmallow stuff! Totally not one I would let the kids free on as its is so naughtily good, but a really lovey quick sweet fix, dolloped on biscuits or used for a breadstick dunk, or just ate with a spoon!
  • Special K Cracker Crisps (£1.29) These are like a nicer rice cracker, not quite as hard in texture and so full of flavour these were a favourite with all of us, and they will be on our shiopping list again.
  • Get Buzzing (£1.30) - Totally delicious and filling and full of goodnes, but would I normally choose to pay this price for a snack bar? Im not sure I would, Im pleased I tried it and if ever we came across a special offer I would definately buy them but sadly not at this price.
  • Blue Dragon Sweet Chilli Sauce ( 2 x £1.39) I love sweet chilli sauce so these were a welcome (athoughnot exactly new to market) addition to the box.
  • Kents Kitchen (£2.50) - These clever little pots come with all the flavouring you need to create a tasty dish, add the oil to a pan then whatever ingredients you want and the spices and paste and et voila a meal in minutes! We recieved theJal Frezi kit which is Spartacus' favourite curry and he said 'that was alright' which beleive me is high recomendation from him

Would I subscribe? I think I would like to give this another few months try, this months box had some lovely items in it many that I wouldnt have bought for myself so I guess the principle behind the boxes has been successful with me. I'm not sure I would have bought or will buy some of the items, but as someone who doesnt frequent supermarkets and sticks to the same shopping list for my online ordering, then its nice to have new products brought to me.

You can connect with degusta box Online, on Facebook or Twitter

Christmas Gift Guide - Travel Themed

As you know we love love love to take holidays and visit new places so I thought a nice travel related gift guide would be a fab idea, now then if I was going to have a great big super splurge travel gift then One of these cruises from the UK would be a dream, Now I must tell you this is not something my 20 year old self imagined thinking! But spending 2 weeks seeing a host of different places whilst lapping up the luxury of a Cruise ship sounds blissful to me. So if Santa wanted to send me round the Canaries I'd be sure to leave him an extra mince pie on a Christmas Eve. But for a less expensive travel related gift check out my top 3 picks...Travel OrganiserI love this travel wallet by Disaster designs, it has space for everything and is so pretty. A little luxurious at £27.50 but it will last for years and years.

    Travel Journal

I love this Luckies - Travelogue it comes with scratch off maps and lots of pages to record your travels and adventures and it's filled with travel tips too. I will be most impressed with one of these under my tree and a bargain at only £12.99

    Tuesday 18 November 2014

    Dear Mr Osborne .....

I'd like to tell you a story, about a 19 year old girl who went to see 'A Clockwork Orange'. No no please stay with me I have a point.

Many years ago after watching a rather brilliant performance at a rather amazing theatre I stood in the theatre bar looking around at an army of performers, technicians and front of house staff, and I knew right then, right there with certainty that I would be part of that magic! So I worked, hard, I mean really hard, I worked 3 jobs to pay my way through uni, I slogged my butt off 7 days a week, about 50 hours to climb up on that stage and shake the hand of a stranger in exchange for a Ba Hons. I worked cleaning auditoriums after panto, I challenge you to do that once without sighing at the scruffiness of folk! I worked selling flashing wands and fairy wings to bad mannered children and their worse mannered parents! I worked selling tickets to the general public and let me tell you keeping your sanity whilst selling a west end show to a bunch of Geordies wanting a bargain, it's not so easy! I worked hard and long and I finally got a job as a manager in that amazing theatre I'd stood in 10 years before. And you know what the 50 Hour weeks they still happened, 4 shows a day, 5 days a week collapsing into bed at 3am and back again at 9 but it was AMAZING. Maybe its not the perfect job for everyone but I never ever questioned my path. Not even when I looked at the paltry £1000 on my pay check! Because theatre doesn't pay well you know, something to do with a lack of funding and the inability to create and foster emerging talent to create outstanding work, despite the arts bringing millions of residual spend to the surrounding economy, go figure eh?!

Then I went and had some babies, two in close succession actually. That's when I started paying for childcare, and that's when I knew my career was coming to an end, you see paying for two very young children for 3 days was costing me best part of £1000! Can you remember how much I told you I got paid? Yes Mr Chancellor I know you are mathematically minded so you will have figured out that my part time wage was less than my childcare and transport bill so I was paying to go to work. Add to that the difficulty of applying for flexible working, and the lack of support I felt upon my return to work. Now don't get me wrong two babies in 18 months is a lot of Maternity leave for any employer to provide so I understand a lack of enthusiasm but I don't think I could ever describe the feeling of leaving behind your babies to the care of a stranger (no matter how much research you've done that is what these people are, Strangers!) to go to a job that really really just doesn't pay enough!
So with a sadness that was eased somewhat by the knowledge that my babies would now be with me all the time, I handed in my notice, knowing that I will NEVER EVER, work in a position the same as the one I left without having to do all that ladder climbing again. So you might understand my crossness when I read this article about you wanting to send us mums back to work in order to contribute to the economy. So I wanted to share my thoughts with you on the difficulties mums face in returning to work and see perhaps if I can't convince you to think a little outside of your money box to support this idea of yours
First off I am supporting the economy, you seem to have no idea of the amount I spend on groups and clubs, clothes and food, travel expenses and craft equipment, entertainment and days out! Not only that but I'm bringing up part of the generation who will take care of you and I in our old decrepit years. I'm nurturing little people to grow into big, tax paying, economy supporting, citizens.

Next you seem clueless as to what it takes to get a parent into work, pre-school and post school care, juggling diary's to coordinate pick ups and drop offs and still get to work in a 24/7 world when child care seems to be 8-6. So maybe we could look at incentives for company's who offer home and flexible working?

Now then answer me this, I've been working in your office for 6 years then I take a break for 4years while I have some babies, then I knock on your door and say 'yoohoo I'm back can I have a job, same grade same pay and same responsibilities? ' would you say yes? no you wouldn't, you would think HA whatever! You are so out of the loop you couldn't explain simple math never mind current policy! So how is it you think women who have had a career break are incentivised at all to try to get back to their careers? I won't be able to get a similar job, not without taking back something from my break that makes me more attractive to employers, something to show for my 'time away' like a masters or a professional qualification, oh but hang on I gave up my salary so where would I find that £5-10k?

And your idea for extra childcare places, tax free, saving £2000 a year. Well that would make my child care bill a measly £22k a year (because now I have three children) still not worth working I'm afraid! I'd actually be paying more than I earn! So maybe you could look at not making chilcare inaccessible to anyone earning less than £40k. Or again reward companies who support home working.

Lets also remember that some women wish to stay at home, unpressurised and unbothered, they don't claim benefits and  they don't complain about not working THEY ARE HAPPY TO BE STAY AT HOME MUMS. Despite the fact that they are judged, quite harshly, by some. Despite the fact that there's not much in the way of praise and celebration for getting through a tough day or dealing with a tough 'customer' (and they come no tougher than toddlers I can assure you). So unless you have some really special plans to help us Stay at Home Mums (yes I hear the derision in your voice) sparkle up our rather bleak looking Cv's or you have an actual workable childcare plan then I'm sorry Mr Osbourne, this SAHM is staying firmly AT HOME

Christmas Gift Guide- The Household Choice

Well with only 39 days to go talk in Monkeyfeet HQ has turned to Gifts, so I thought now might me a good time to start my gift guide, this first post is a really interesting one to me. But I have to tell you that my twenties self would have scoffed at the idea of buying household goods for Christmas! Not now though, and I know we aren't alone in this, Spartacus and I tend to buy just a little something for each other but use some money to buy things we need for the house.

So at the top of our household list this year are....

    A Kitchen Aid in Pistachio

Berry and Hollywood have a lot to answer for! I love these I mean they are beautiful and would look so amazing in my kitchen. I know I'm not alone in my lusting either these are a very coveted item

    Bread Maker

I know I know I should be making my own by hand but really the idea of throwing stuff in a machine pressing a button and then relaxing while our fresh bread is made for us sounds ideal! So this year I'm asking Santa for a lovely new bread machine

    DECT Phone

This one is all for Spartacus. Me personally, I'd be happy with a rotary dial phone! Seriously I so rarely use the home phone it doesn't bother me, but Spartacus has set his eyes upon touch a screen Phone with an answering system! Honestly he's such a techno geek but I think he'd be really happy with a shiny new all singing all dancing DECT phone so let's hope Santa is equally geeky in his shopping

So this is our old fogy 'stuff for the house' shopping list. Do you do something similar in your house? Or do you save Christmas gifts for purely personal presents.

    My Top Three Healthy Habits

You may have been following my progress on my #Mummymakeover, I won't lie sometimes it's been tough going but I'm really striving to make changes and lead a healthier lifestyle. Now I am by no means an expert but these are the top three healthy habits that have helped me so far...

    Walking

Seriously it's free, it's really good for your health and your mind. Walking gives you time to have peace and calm, and quiet in your head (all parents know exactly what I mean) and I can do it with my termite in her pram. So I walk A LOT. Everyday I just walk, not thinking about the list of things to do, or the housework, not always with purpose, just enjoying the fresh air, the scenery and the peace. The only things you need are suitable, weather appropriate, clothes, and comfortable shoes, Et voila free healthy exercise at your own pace.

    Eat Less Rubbish

I know it sounds so simple. But really truly I eat junk food sometimes just because it's there! So I've started menu planning, from this I write a shopping list and then stick to it. If I don't have rubbish in the house then I won't eat it. Simple yet effective, simply leave it in the supermarket especially if like me you have no will power, self control or an "off button".

    Sleep!
This is a big important tip, yet sometimes harder than any type of exercise especially if you are parent to young people. I have learned that sleep is more important than a sparkling floor, more important than the perfect craft project and sometimes more important than finishing that blog post! Let me tell you something you may well know already, not all babies sleep, actually some children don't sleep! I have friends who's children wake at 5am every day! If you are a parent who's little angel wakes regulararly irregularly or super early then here is my most helpful tip to feel better, healthier and more filled with energy... Treat yourself at least once a week to an early night, switch off your phone and the TV, turn off the computer and put down the dishcloth/to do list/ mop and go to bed as soon as the kids do. I promise you will notice a difference.

    And a Brucey Bonus

    Switch IT Off
We live in a 24/7 society and smart phones make everything easier, quicker, and more accessible but do you ever think about how much time you spend on your phone? Honestly truly are you doing phone things whilst talking to your spouse or your friends or your kids? I'm not judging and if I'm honest I'm guilty of all of the above, in my defence if I don't do something as soon as I think of it then I will forget completely so my phone makes things happen! But I read recently a tip to help you feel more peaceful and calm..... Turn off your phone for 2 hours every day, just turn it off and then really take notice of what's happening around you. It will make you feel calmer, happier and less put upon, honestly if it's off then you won't know that someone thinks you should tell them immediately what you think of their customer service, or that you have £3.5m awaiting you in the FBI headquarters and you know what, you will stop caring too! Peace calm and happiness will be yours.
