Comic Relief - How To Help

Imagine giving birth in a hospital with no lights, in fact no electricity! Imagine carrying twins and knowing there is no special care available for your babies so if they come early there's no incubator no special equipment. Imagine this being normal!!?!! Well I'm sitting in my palatial, in comparison to what I'm watching, home warm and safe I'm watching people in Uganda for whom this IS normal. Clinics filled with rats, bats and scorpions so bad in fact that people critically ill would rather go home than risk sleeping in these conditions.

So whilst I sit here crying over a fellow mothers loss. Feeling angry at the world for such unnecessary suffering I thought I would share some ways you can help...

The Blessing of Books - My Thankful Thursday

Staying topical this week I wanted to share my gratitude for books and reading.

I have memories of curling up with a book and getting lost in a story from being very very young. In fact I still remember when I was about 10yrs old reading "The Silver Crown" and being so engrossed that at times I felt scared! I remember even younger than that reading many many Roal Dahl books with utter pleasure.

It Brings me so much joy to read to my kids but moreover to see them reading for joy and entertainment. I'm so grateful that for now they are happiest reading and writing, it makes me happy that technology hasn't yet taken its hold and perhaps when it does we can encourage them to listen to audio books or read ebooks.

Book Day Dress up

So today on World Book Day I'm thankful we have books in schools, that we have free access to amazing libraries, that we have freedom to choose our own reading materials and that we have so much wonderful literature to choose from!

Home Organisation - Drawers of Doom

Do yours or your kids drawers look a bit like this....

Does it drive you bonkers that no matter how organised you are they pull everything out to see what's there? Seriously my husband drives me insane. I can never fit any laundry in his drawers because he has pulled the bottom t-shirt from his drawer leaving the rest in a heap crumpled and disorganised!

I have the best most life changing (yep I'm THAT excited about it) way to sort drawers, maximise space and cut dressing time!

It's the vertical stack and store! Please note I love organisation, I have compartmentalised Tupperware storage and my pantry borders on the level of OCD displayed in 'Sleeping With The Enemy' so this totally floats my boat and I'm sad that I've just started doing it. So here goes....

  • Empty your Drawers and prepare to be amazed!
  • You need to fold each item of clothing inwards by thirds
  • Then up and down by thirds or quarters depending on the length

  • Then stack them upright in your drawers
Now you can pick out exactly which one you want in seconds without disturbing the other items in the drawer. It even works on trousers and skirts, dresses in fact almost everything

It also means I've cleared at least one drawer in each room! Do you have any good tips for home organisation?

Badgemaster Review

I'm a bit of a fan of name badges, I like to see people wearing them because I can thank them personally (or note their name if customer care is seriously failing!) I also always liked to wear one when I was at work so people knew they could approach me. Now that I'm self employed and mostly work from home I've not had any need for one, I mean I'd happily wear a 'mammy' name tag but my kids don't seem to struggle in asking me for a million things (mostly food) a day!

But this year I've been invited to lots of press nights, launches and blogging events, I'm even hoping to find a sponsor so I can go to Brit Mums Live and I thought it would be nice to have a badge. So I jumped at the chance to review The service and products from Badgemaster.

You design your own badge on their website inputting your text and logo's. Choosing from a good selection of shapes colours and finishes, even selecting your preferred fastening from about 6 choices I went for the clip and pin combo, with my blog log (a blogo if you will ha ha) and then some text underneath.

The process is really easy and you just follow the step by step prompts, check you are happy then submit. Badgemaster will then email you a quote for the badge.

At this point I panicked a little that I may have been scewif (another northern term) in my design but Karen at Badgemaster calmed me down saying their design boffins would check it and send me a final proof. This came quickly and then you just confirm its all correct and wait for the invoice. Once you've paid the badge takes about 7-10 days to arrive.

Isn't it lovely? It's really nice quality and is finished beautifully, I chose to have rounded edges (many lessons in scratching myself on pointy badge edges has left me a fan on a gentle curve! It feels very hardwearing and they've printed it beautifully, no problems at all with clarity and readability.

They don't just make badges though, you can order lanyards, card holders, certificates, signage and button badges. And a look at their client list gives an indication of their reputation for quality and reliability....

Slimming World Review and Thoughts

The thing about weight loss is that everyone talks about it, no matter if you are on Weigh Watchers, Paleo, Slimming World or The Cabbage Soup Diet there's a universal willingness to chat about it. So I have conversed lots with mummy friends and old school pals and even complete strangers about how we all find our choice of weight loss. When I became a Slimming World Blogger I thought I would just write about my food and my results and that would speak for itself, after all I've done this before (yeah yeah 15 years ago!) and so I thought it would be simple..... You will realise by the end of this post that weight loss, for me at least, is way more complex in your 30s than in your 20's. so let me try to explain

  • I grew up with a fad dieting, weight yoyo-ing, self loathing mum (and believe me these were the least of her issues). You can easily imagine how quick and simple it was for me to develop issues with food and self image faced with a Mum who Hated everything about her body! Since becoming a mum I've become more vocal on my opinions on body image and female sexualisation than I ever imagined. I do not wish my children (girls or the boy!) to feel inferior about anything least of all judge themselves lacking because of appearances. As such I've made very clear choices not to express any dissatisfaction at my body or image to them, this in turn has had quite a positive effect on me, I have more confidence in myself than ever in my life, yeah sure a body like Cindy Crawford wouldn't be so bad but it won't make me a better mum, wife or friend! Nope those qualities are all me and having a not washboard perfect tummy doesn't affect those things at all.Not wanting my kids worrying about weight and numbers is also the reason I've opted out of the governments weighing and measuring of school children but that's a post all on its own. So for me Slimming World is a good choice for weight loss, my kids never hear the word diet because we still all eat the same things, we still eat together and we still eat A LOT!
  • Now this bit may be a ramble, my favourite sanity saving quote when going anywhere with children is 'it's not about the destination it's about the journey' but it's dawned on me this week after quite a lengthy weight loss convo with a good friend that with weight loss it is about the destination not the journey! Members in my class have lost amazing amounts in short times, 9lb in 2 weeks, A stone in 3 weeks and they are rightly and deservedly chuffed to bits, the aforementioned mummy friend with whom I was chatting is perfectly happy having lost 8.5lb in 2 months because this includes Christmas and New Year! Me I'm almost 99% happy with my Stone in 6 weeks. You see some slimmers take the coastal route meandering along the rocky paths stopping to take in some sea air, some floor it and head straight down the M1 but when we get to Target Towers (I just made that up, slimming world don't have an actual tower full of target members!) we all have the same feeling of achievement the same cheesy smile and the same plan to throw our bank cards at the nearest department store for THAT outfit . That for me is the brilliance of Slimming World there's no pressure no criticism just celebration and support and did you know On average, members lose around 8% body weight in six months and around 13% by 12 months whilst attending group!

I've tried lots of diets (a shameful amount) ....

Weight Watchers

Juice Fast

Heart Patient

Cabbage Soup

Slim fast

Clean Eating

5:2

Atkins

Adios Tablets

Fat Melting Pills

I could pick fault with everyone of them but so as not to be biased I asked my network of parents (all 6456 of them) here are some of the things people have disliked about some of the diets they've been on

Bad Breath

Headaches

Not keeping the weight off

Feeling restricted

Eating odd combinations of food

Awful side effects

Feeling hungry

Not being able to eat with the family

Gas

The list went on and it was long and sad to read

I've had no such issues with Slimming World because the food is everyday food it's just small changes that lead to big results, I still have curry kebab and pizza, I especially still have chocolate. There's very little weighing and measuring nothing is forbidden and the food is good and healthy.

My final thoughts on Slimming World this time around?

I love the community feel to classes, I have a joke and a laugh with the money ladies and the weigh-in lady. Our consultant is down to earth and funny and class conversation is kind spirited and helpful. Yeah with a bigger class sometimes that round of applause for everyone can seem to take a while but whoever is last still deserves the celebrations that the first member got. And that round of applause and bit chat (it's Called Image Therapy by the way) that's dead important! I promise it is. To me it means accountability and feeds my human need to succeed and get recognition, now don't roll your eyes we're all the same! Image therapy is proven to work so if class is running over a bit try to remember someone is waiting for their mini parade.

What of the cost? Well it's £4.95 a week so less than a pound a day, and in my opinion it's worth every penny. I know I don't stick to plan so well if I'm going it alone and then I'm back to ignoring the strain in my waistband and the need for those baggy tops!

I know I could be accused of being made biased by the euphoria of losing a stone and still eating chocolate almost every day and well I guess that's true I am biased! I'm happy and I eat everything I fancy I've not suffered and my whole family enjoy the food I make.

#Mummymakeover - Week 7 Weigh In

So this week extra to my Slimming World plan I have ate ....

  • 2 takeaway Currys
  • A fish finger
  • Half a packet of chocolate biscuits (8 biscuits)
  • A tortilla wrap

So it is with relief I tell you that I gained a pound! Don't get me wrong it's in the wrong direction and it shows a complete lack of self control but a pound feels like I got off lightly and it's given me a good kick in the butt to be better next week!

So my plan for next week

  • Get my bike out and ride it!
  • Work on the allotment (eeeeek I have an allotment!)
  • Do at least 1 work out (I'd very much like suggestions for a good one to try)
  • Walk more
  • Stick to the plan

See you all next week x
